Our global network

Plant & Food Research has a global network of research collaborators that supports our position as a world leader in our research field. Our collaborations with like-minded scientific organisations globally enable us to advance scientific understanding, as well as providing access to additional funding, resources and skills to complement our research programmes.

We collaborate with more than 100 organisations globally, and have formal relationships with a number of research institutes designed to further research in specific areas of beneficial interest.


Joint Laboratory - partnership with the University of Adelaide to develop high-value products from agricultural waste.

SITPlus – collaboration with CSIRO, Horticulture Innovation Australia Limited, the Department of Primary Industries and Regions South Australia, the New South Wales Department of Primary Industries and Macquarie University to develop a biological control for Queensland fruit fly.


China-New Zealand Joint Laboratory for Fruit Science – partnership with the Chinese Academy of Agricultural Science Zhengzhou Fruit Research Institute.

Joint Research Centre – partnership with the Yunnan Academy of Science & Technical Information and the Yunnan Red Pear Science & Technology Company.

New Zealand-China Joint Laboratory for Kiwifruit Research – partnership with the Sichuan Provincial Academy of Natural Resource Sciences.

China-New Zealand Apple Research Centre - partnership with Northwest A&F University, Yangling, Shaanxi.

New Zealand

Better Border Biosecurity – a multi-partner collaboration that conducts research to reduce the entry and establishment of new plant pests and disease in New Zealand.

Biopolymer Network – partnership with AgResearch and Scion to develop biopolymers, bio-base speciality chemicals, bio-composites, bio-foams and moulded structures based on materials from trees and plants.

Bio-Protection Research Centre – national Centre of Research Excellence finding innovative, natural and sustainable solutions to protect New Zealand’s plant-based, productive ecosystems from pests, diseases and weeds.

Bioresource Processing Alliance – partnership with AgResearch, Callaghan Innovation and Scion to develop high value products from low value biological resources, such as secondary by-products from primary industries.

FoodHQ – collaboration of New Zealand partners, based in Palmerston North, providing research to support the global food industry.

New Zealand Agricultural Greenhouse Gas Research Centre – partnership between New Zealand research providers conducting research and development into mitigation solutions for greenhouse gases.

Riddet Institute – national Centre of Research Excellence focused on food structure and digestive physiology.

Soil & Land Use Alliance – partnership with AgResearch, Landcare Research and Scion to deliver high quality soil and land use research that contributes to economic growth for New Zealand.

South Island Dairying Development Centre – partnership to accelerate dairying development in the South Island through the delivery of innovative, practical research, technical education, extension and training support.
